What Is An Epidural Injection For Pain?

Epidural Injections are steroid injections, performed to bring down inflammation between the spinal nerve and a disc bulge, or herniated disc. This procedure is often performed on patients with pain caused by a herniated disc, sciatica, or spinal stenosis. This in-office procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, with only minimal discomfort. A novacaine type medication and anti-inflammatory medications are injected precisely to the area where the nerve and disc are irritated. The effect is to rapidly bring down any inflammation on the nerve from the disc to ease pain.


How Is the Epidural Performed?

We perform epidural injections in our office, on an out-patient basis. To ensure the precise placement of the injection, the procedure is performed under fluoroscopic guidance, with a contrast agent.

Our patients report minimal discomfort, and the procedure takes less then 30 minutes.


What Can I Expect?

Most patients experience benefit from the injection within two days following the procedure. Epidural Injections are typically part of an integrative treatment plan including other office therapies; such as OMT, massage and physical therapy.
